The older tube-type units are very simple, just a tube oscillator and a few resistors and caps inside. They are pretty good at finding shorted turns in flybacks. Webtesting high voltage flyback is simple too, but requires external supply for higher Uc (clamping voltage), like Uc = 7.5V = 0.7V + 6.8V Uc = 20.7V = 0.7V + 20V the DVM's diode tester is not sufficient, as it cannot output that high voltage. Therefore and external, current limited supply is required.
